Abstract

Abstract Although of relatively low permeability, glacial tills may have deficiencies that make them less suitable as natural leachate containment materials. These deficiencies include sand lenses, fissures, and weathering zones. Geotechnical investigations of proposed unlined containment sites on tills must fully assess the impact of these and other deficiencies. This paper examines the proposals for a household and commercial waste containment site on Lowestoft Till at Hardwick Airfield, Norfolk, and concludes that the site deficiencies had not been adequately investigated or recognized. This led to difficulties for the consultants at a public inquiry into the proposals.
