Abstract

A simple method for constructing gauge invariant actions for both free massive bosonic fields of arbitrary spin as well as for string fields is described. The method is based on the use of Lagrance multipliers and the introduction of auxiliary fields and results in expressions that are straightforward generalizations of the Stueckelberg action for massive vector fields. An application of the method to the free bosonic string gives the corresponding gauge invariant action for the string field functional in a rather pedestrian way. Although the role of the critical dimensions is apparent in the derivation we show how to extend the result outside of 26 dimensions.
