The construction of discrete vortex models of ideal incompressible fluid flows

Abstract

A variational method is given for constructing discrete vortex models which describe two-dimensional ideal incompressible fluid flows. The connection of these models with those used previously is found. The working of the method is illustrated by solving test problems on Rankin and Kirchhoff vortices, which have analytic solutions.
