Abstract

Summary For a few years the modification of the constitutions of the Discalced Carmelites has not gone smoothly. Initially the drafting of the new constitutions was a task of the general superior of the Discalced Carmelites. When it became obvious that there was no unanimity among the Carmelites, as far as the contents were concerned, the Pope issued a directive in 1984, in which he established the framework for the contents of the constitutions. He also laid the matter in the hands of the relevant congregation. The draft-constitutions were presented in 1986. This was followed by a storm of reactions. Although this was the object of the Second Vatican Council, most of the nuns thought that the constitutions had not been updated. After the reactions of the nuns had been received, the matter was, once again, put in the hands of the order.
