Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the significance of Vatican II’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, as it seeks to foster the full, conscious, and active participation of all the baptized in the prayer of the Church. The chapter situates the document in the context of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century movement of liturgical renewal, its redaction history, and post-conciliar reception. Further, the chapter presents the theological principles and pastoral directives of the constitution which guide the liturgical renewal and practice of the Church, including implications for sacramental rites, the liturgical year, the liturgy of the hours, sacred music, and the arts.
