Abstract

This paper gives a detailed study of the first process control computer to be implemented at Consolidated Diamond Mines. The computer, a Foxboro 2/30, is used for the control of No. 2 Conglomerate Plant which has recently been commissioned. The integration of the computer into the design of this new minerals processing plant is discussed, including a brief study of the feasibility of using a computer as opposed to standard instrumentation. The various functions of the computer such as data logging and alarming are described to show how information pertinent to the efficient running of the plant is presented to operators in an easily understandable form. A description of the process control loops is given, including a brief discussion of the plant layout and instrumentation used in the harsh weather conditions of South West Africa. In conclusion, there is a resume of the difficulties encountered during the commissioning of the computer control system.
