Abstract

A noteworthy achievement in vaccination history has been the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in low-income and middle-income countries with high infant mortality. Since WHO first promoted universal use of rotavirus vaccines in children in 2009,1 rotavirus vaccines, as of January 2022, have been introduced in national immunisation programmes in 79% of sub-Saharan African countries, 60% of countries in the Americas, 67% in the eastern Mediterranean region, and 46% in southeast Asia, including most countries on the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka are planning the introduction of rotavirus vaccines).
