Abstract

The control of 4f wavefunction collapse in 4d excited atomic C is explored as a function of screening. It is shown that this leads to a correct order of magnitude estimate of the pressure required to drive the phase transition in archetype examples of unstable valence, and the connection with Ce and SmS is stressed.
