Abstract

An investigation of a conical z-pinch plasma gun, using a high speed camera and magnetic probes, has shown that a conical current sheet implodes to form a highly luminous axial pinch. The plasma and the current sheet at the muzzle of the gun are always symmetrical about the axis. The interaction between the azimuthal magnetic field and the current sheet ejects a plasma blob containing more than 10% of the injected gas. The conversion efficiency of capacitor energy into flow energy is 3%. A second, slower, plasma blob is also ejected.
