Do you remember? It was 25 May 1989. The whole country was glued to television sets and radios as the first session of the first Congress of People's Deputies got under way in the Moscow Kremlin. They were electing the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In the streets, people were walking around carrying transistor radios. Others would ask them, Well, what's going on at the Congress? Comments on every speech could be heard in shopping queues, on public transportation, and at the little stalls near building entrances.
