Abstract

The concept of le jeune cinéma as it was established in the years after 1995 is no longer applicable. French cinema is certainly a cinema of young directors making their first films, but does not recognize itself in the kind of civic movement that occurred in 1997. Many of the young directors are making ephemeral commercially-oriented films as a response to US blockbusters. Others are innovating by using new technologies. Young directors are opening new avenues in animated films, and especially in a revitalized documentary genre, transformed by auteurs who implicate themselves in ways that bring these films closer to fiction.
