Abstract

AbstractChina strongly invests in technology, takes advantage of a massive market, and benefits from a stable political regime—all three aspects contributing to the success of its national system of innovation. The State and the Communist Party play a definitive role: authorities are like a conductor, and actors cannot depart from the partition. Technological goals are nevertheless impacted by political factors and the future of China is heavily dependent on the evolution of its relationship with the USA. Indigenous innovation is mostly incremental, but some breakthrough innovation might come from emerging areas.KeywordsConductorPerformerIncremental innovationBreakthrough innovation
