Abstract

The conduct of modern diplomacy came about due to the need to relate with other nation-states without fault lines. This paper condenses the why is and how is of the ways of modern diplomacy. The birth of diplomacy in Europe in the 13th century, its expansion and influence by evolution in the modes by which the tactics of diplomacy are executed has been remarkable. Modern diplomacy as it is today can no longer be practiced using traditional tools and lines alone. Contemporary or modern diplomacy has evolved into complex tactics for achieving lasting relationships and or goals. Diplomacy is a non-violent approach to managing international relations that relies principally upon dialogue to make effective two-way communications, negotiations, and compromises. The aim of most states or actors in any diplomatic process is to enable the security of objectives (interests and values) without the resolve to the use of force, propaganda, or legal means. The impinging requirement for states to continue on a mutual plan has made the anathematization of formal diplomacy difficult. Instead, it has helped to give credence to its relevance as a tactic for foreign relations, and this study aims to show the importance of diplomacy and the diplomat.
