Abstract

1 Department of Psychology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This review was prepared during the tenures of predoctoral fellowships from the National Institute of Mental Health, United States Public Health Service, and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, University of Michigan. The survey of the literature pertaining to this review was carried through December, 1962. The present writer is indebted to the several authors who provided pre-publication manuscripts and information concerning their investigations, as well as to the National Association for Mental Health. During 1963–1964 the writer is at the Psychological Institute, Department of Psychiatry, Kommunehospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark.
