Abstract

The process of inner speech is central to all modes of symbolic human communication and, as such, should be taught in an integral way in the secondary language arts curriculum. This paper reviews selected research concerning the functional and structural characteristics of inner speech and discusses eight specific implications for its inclusion in the development of competencies which are pertinent to the secondary language arts curriculum.
