Abstract
Observations on the pathways of projections and the positioning of persecutors in external geographical space in paranoid patients led the author to formulate a hypothesis concerning an archaic space, which is two-dimensional and includes the left and the right halves of the body. In archaic space, the categories of left and right appear to be constant signs of primary objects in their spatial relations to the body Ego. These relationships may be used in analytic work to orient oneself regarding the patient's primary objects at various levels of mental development. Paranoid patients regularly project their persecutors to the left. Patients with perversions and other early disturbances consistently use the right half of archaic space as the locus of the splitting-projection of an un-integrated, pre-Oedipal maternal imago.
