Abstract

Payroll and student records have been with us as long as the professor and the classroom. The technology which evolved out of Hollerith's invention of the punched card came to be used by those concerned with payroll and student records many years ago and the "unit record" became part of the life style of those concerned with university management activity. The invention of the electronic digital computer provided a natural and important complement to an already wide spread and highly diffused information handling technology based on the punched card. With the interfacing of the computer (now better designated the information processing machine) to the communication network, we are experiencing another large leap forward in the level of sophistication of information handling.
