Abstract

This paper describes a program for turning an IBM 1620 into an automatic experimenter which administers a complex problem-solving task to individual subjects. Communication between subject and computer is in terms of ordinary English with certain restrictions in wording. The advantages and disadvantages of automated experimentation are discussed. Some preliminary results comparing the problem solving elicited by human and automated experimenters are mentioned.
