Abstract

The two distinct formulations for the computation of flames in opposed and impinging jetsare reviewed and related to one another. Emphasis is placed on the velocity and pressure distributions in opposed flows but extension to impinging flows and to the state variables is obvious. The unitary formulation involves integration from one exit plane to the other and yields the stagnation plane location, the distribution of the rate of strain and the structure of one or more reaction zones as part of the solution. When the Reynolds number is suitably large. a straightforward asymptotic analysis yields a description of the flow in terms of two outer zones of constant density separated by a thin layer centered on the stagnation plane and encompassing the reaction zone or zones. A Froude number reflecting the role of buoyancy is shown to influence only the axial pressure distribution.
