Abstract The metal abundance of the nearby M subdwarf Kapteyn's star is obtained from a 10 A mm -1 spectrum in the near-infrared. The weighted mean value of [M/H] is - 0.55 + 0.15 (p.e.), confirming an earlier estimate from the strength of the TiO bands. The 0/C ratio in Kapteyn's star is within a factor of 2 of the solar value. The effect of pressure broadening in a cool subdwarf atmosphere is to strengthen the lines of the Ca ii infrared triplet relative to those of a mainsequence star of equal temperature.
