Abstract

Gout is a form of arthritis that is caused by the build-up and deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints of the body and surrounding areas. Guidelines for the management of gout have been produced by the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) which are based on expert opinion and evidence supported by a systematic review of literature. The aim of this audit is to establish how well these guidelines are being followed in general practice. By gaining access to the electronic patient record at the practice, compliance to the BSR guidelines can be assessed by review of patient notes. Results showed that the practice was not following the guidelines with respect to gout management and many patients were not receiving the gold standard of gout care. Changes need to be implemented which should see an improvement in the detection and monitoring of gout in primary care.
