Abstract
The debate engendered by the groundbreaking article of Hecht, Ribeau, and Sedano is continued here. The efforts of Hecht et al. are to be applauded, but the essay and ensuing exchange with Mirandé and Tanno highlight some basic conceptual inadequacies in exploring Mexican American identity and its relationship to communication. This essay extends the terms of the debate to include a call for precision and accuracy in assessing the types and moments of particular identities used by Mexican Americans. Researchers must be careful in their terminologies because of the ideological and cultural trajectories of Mexican American identities.
