Abstract

The competitive oxidation of acetylene and propyne between 280 and 330° has shown that σ-radicals, produced by the reaction of chain-propagating radicals with acetylene, abstract a proton from propyne rather than add oxygen, and that branching in propyne oxidation proceeds through addition of the chain-propagating radicals to propyne.
