Abstract
Since 1999, the EU and the Mercosur countries have negotiated an Association Agreement (AA) which will include a trade pillar, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The latter aims at increasing the amount of goods crossing borders, including products associated with high greenhouse gas emissions or having adverse impacts on forests and other valuable ecosystems. This article assesses whether the adoption of the FTA would contravene the EU’s obligations under international law and EU primary law – with a focus on climate protection.
