Abstract

Abstract - This study is focused on driving with manual orautomatic transmissions in City with heavy traffics. Generally, it aimedto compare the manual transmission with the automatic transmissionof an automobile. Specifically, it sought to determine the extent ofthe difference on the effectiveness between the two transmissionsas perceived by the respondents and their significant difference.Observation and checklist questionnaire coupled with interview wasused to gather the data using convenience sampling whereby only theowners and/or drivers with automobiles with manual and automatictransmissions driving in Vigan City were taken as the respondents.Based from the findings, there is a significant difference betweenmanual and automatic transmissions of an automobile in city driving,whereby, the latter transmission is better on “driving comfort” whilethe former is better on “utility”, “fuel consumption”, and “service andmaintenance”. It is then recommended that the extent of differenceon the effectiveness between the manual and automatic transmissionsof an automobile should be disseminated to inform auto mechanicstudents as part of their learning and guide the prospective buyersand users on what transmission of an automobile to prefer. Also,automobile companies must keep on improving the technology on the effectiveness of automobiles pertaining on their transmissions.
