Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of bilateral medial rectus recession versus bilateral medial rectus recession combined with Faden procedure for treatment of convergence excess esotropia. Methods Twenty-eight cases of convergence excess esotropia with normal AC/A ratio (<6)were investigated. The esodeviation difference between near and distance was more than 15 prism diopters. Twelve cases were treated with bilateral medial rectus recession whereas 16 cases were treated with bilateral medial rectus recesi0n combined with Faden procedure. Results Nine of 12 patients who were treated with bilateral medial rectus recession alone were still residual more than 10 prism diopters, esodeviation at near. Fourteen of 16 patients who were treated with bilateral medial rectus recesion combined with Faden procedure were alignment at near whereas only 2 patients were still residual more than 10 prism diopters esodeviation at near, however, 2 patients were a little overaction in the distance. Conclusions The bilateral medial rectus recession combined with Faden procedure is better effective method for convergence esotropia than bilateral medial rectus recession. Key words: Faden procedure; Convergence excess esotropia
