Abstract
SINCE the initial report of Dodds, Goldberg, Lawson and Robinson on the preparation and estrogenic properties of stilbestrol (diethyl stilbestrol), a nunv ber of workers have compared the physiological effects of this compound with the various natural estrogens. Investigators have generally agreed that in spayed adult rats or mice stilbestrol is more effective orally than any of the natural estrogens. Of the natural estrogenic compounds estriol is the most effective orally and estradiol the most effective by subcutaneous injection. Table i gives comparisons between oral and subcutaneous estrogen activities in adult spayed rats and mice reported by five groups of investigators (a to 7).
