Abstract

1. 1. Two types of acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS) have been isolated and separated from Ascaris and Tubifex by the method described by Rahemtulla & Løvtrup (1974). 2. 2. Electrophoretic, chemical and infrared studies indicate that hyaluronic acid and oversulphated chondroitin sulphate are present in Ascaris. 3. 3. Unsulphated and sulphated AMPS have been identified in Tubifex. 4. 4. A distinguishing feature of the unsulphated AMPS of Tubifex is the presence of glucose, galactose, mannose and fucose. 5. 5. The sulphated AMPS of Tubifex has a chemical composition very similar to that of keratan sulphate.
