Abstract

Ancient Chinese society characterizes local color. In the society that reflects simple local features, activities of communication among the people are held in a continuous way, with main forms featuring the spread and popularity through mouth and ears in a larger network. Folk song and popular saying are two important ways of communication of ordinary people, but the song is an indispensable part of life of ordinary people. Folk artists also tend to tell present and ancient stories in the form of dialogue and song, and they are what we know about pien-wen (bianwen in Chinese refers to a literary genre including prose and verse, which is performed in the form of dialogue and song, with its focus on paraphrasing Buddhist sutra and folk stories).
