Abstract
THE Columbus space station programme is an essential element of the European long‐term scenario adopted by the ESA Council Meeting at Ministerial Level in 1987, comprising also the new launcher Ariane 5, the space plane Hermes, a Data Relay Satellite, ground operations centres as well as corresponding utilisation programmes.
