Abstract
The Columbia precepting program is a unique part of the revitalization project for the Columbia University School of Nursing. It offers one-to-one clinical precepting experience to students in the introductory as well as advanced nursing courses. The goal of this program is to provide a comprehensive, realistic experience for undergraduate students that is practical as well as educationally and fiscally sound. The development and implementation of the precepting program reflect a cooperative partnership between nursing education and nursing service. The program provides substantial benefits for both parties, including opportunities for students to gain experience in a variety of settings not previously utilized, professional socialization, validation of professional role and commitment, enhariced recruitment and retention, and decreased orientation costs.
