Abstract

Visitors to the College have the chance to see the elegant library reading room designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, and rebuilt between 1834 and 1836. Together with the 1828 portico and the main entrance it is the only part of the College to survive the 1941 bombing and is listed as Grade II* by English Heritage. During Open House, which takes place on 20 September in 2008 (see http://www.openhouse.org.uk/london/home.html), members of the public will also have the opportunity to view the room. It is still recognisably the same as in the photograph taken in the early 1890s (top of article). The day-to-day services have, however, changed enormously in line with the evolution of medical education and the practice of surgery.
