Abstract

Abstract An elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is made on plates subjected to a patch load and in-plane bending in order to study the collapse behaviour of web plates on a launching shoe. An FEM procedure with the arc-length increment technique is used as a numerical method. The magnitude of in-plane bending moment and the existence and location of a horizontal stiffener are adopted as parameters. From this analysis, the influence of the in-plane moment and the contributions of stiffeners to the strength of such web plates are found. The effects of the parameters on the collapse modes and collapse behaviour, such as the development of yield lines, are also found from the analysis.
