Abstract

It is well known that the Tavistock Theodolite derives its name from the town of Tavistock in Devon which was in 1926 the site of a Conference between Survey Officers of the British Government and representatives of the principal manufacturing firms. About eighteen months later the first British-made double-reading optical theodolite was delivered to the Admiralty Hydrographer, the late Vice-Admiral Sir Percy Douglas, K.C.B., C.M.G.
