Abstract

Recent observations of the coexistence of (ferrite+cementite) and (ferrite+M23C6) pearlites in an isothermally treated Fe-C-Mn-Al steel are discussed. The austenite decomposition pathways that lead to the co-existence of the two “pearlites” are examined, and the possible implications for mechanical properties of fully lamellar structures are highlighted. Experimental observations of the coexistence of separate lamellar aggregates from discontinuous precipitation and eutectoid decomposition in a Cu-In alloy microstructure are presented.
