Abstract

The nucleotide sequences of the RNA phage MS2 and the DNA phage φX were subjected to statistical analysis. This analysis alone indicates (a) that the genetic code is a non-overlapping triplet code and (b) what the correct reading frame is. The application of these methods to identify structure in sequences of unknown function is discussed.
