Abstract

This chapter provides details of the 1986 and 2002 (current) versions of the Code of Ethics for psychologists working in Aotearoa New Zealand. Particular attention is paid to the context within which these Codes were developed, and highlights the significant shift in thinking which led to the striking difference between the two iterations of the Code. The primary feature of the current Code is its greater orientation to New Zealand’s bi-cultural commitments under te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) which outlines the obligations of the Crown to the indigenous people of the land (tangata whenua). This requires active engage with Māori tikanga (customs and practices) and mātaranga Māori (Māori knowledge) as both a competence requirement and an ethical imperative.
