Abstract

There is great need for a detailed study on the complex pattern of coagulation and fibrinolysis during placental separation with regard to the demands of a rapid post partum hemostasis. Thus, the two parameters of coagulation and fibrinolysis taking place after placental separation have been analysed. There was an activation of the clotting mechanism increased in uterine blood, and at the same time a considerable amount of placental thromboplastin was consumed from the separated placental tissue. On the other hand, FDP (fibrin degradation products) were shown to increase rapidly after separation of the placenta. In particular, the increase was more marked in uterine venous blood, indicating that the uterus was the source of the FDP.
