Abstract

Abstract The clover cyst nematode (Heterodera trifolii Goffart) is recorded in New Zealand. This is the first record of it for the Southern Hemisphere. The distribution of the nematode is under investigation, but appears to be widespread and of long standing. The New Zealand pedigree strain of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) which is the basis of all certified seed produced in this country has a high degree of resistance to the nematode and this may be associated with the high cyanogenetic glucoside content of the clover. The presence of the nematode may be a contributing factor to the problem of dying out of white clover in pastures.
