Abstract
The patient’s clinical presentation, the diagnostic or rehabilitation questions raised, and the skill of the neuropsychological examiner determine how functions are sampled and what tests are administered. The patient’s level and pattern of performance on various standardized tests provide the systematic observations on which the clinical neuropsychologist makes statements concerning the nature of the patient’s higher cerebral or integrative functions. Clinical neuropsychologists rely heavily on well-standardized neuropsychological tests. Clinical neuropsychologists should have freedom on how they assess each of these dimensions. The costs of providing neuropsychological services, and particularly clinical neuropsychological examination services, can be viewed from the perspective of individual practitioners or groups. Theoretically, clinical neuropsychologists spend 25 to 30 hours per week providing neuropsychological services. In reality, however, this is probably an underestimate. Many of these services include time devoted to the clinical evaluation of patients. In an active clinical neuropsychology department, clinical neuropsychologists often are engaged in clinical research.
