Abstract

Objectives To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the metal ureteral stent in relieving malignant ureteral obstruction. Methods Clinical data of 47 patients with malignant ureteral tumour from September 2012 to April 2015 in our hospital were analyzed retrospectively, who were given resonance metallic stents and divided into a success group (n=39) and an failure group (n =8) according to the treatment results. Fourty stents were inserted via cystoscopy or ureteroscopy in a retrograde fashion. The remaining seven were inserted via percutaneous nephrostomy in an antegrade manner. The clinical efficacy of metal stent was evaluated in various different ways, including postoperative complications, degree of hydronephrosis, serum creatinine, indwelling time and failure rate. The correlation between several aspects(sex, operation ways and tumor category) and failure rate were analyzed in two groups. Results A total of 54 metal ureteral stents were placed in 47 patients and the overall ureteral patency rate was 100% .The complication of metal stent was 59%(28/47)and the failure rate was 17%(8/47). There was obvious correlation between postoperative complications and failure rate, but there was no correlation among sex, operation ways, tumor category and failure rate. Median follow-up was eight months. The average of placement time was six months and the longest was one half years. Conclusions Metal ureteral stents is effective way to relieve ureteral tumour obstruction and prevent further deterioration of kidney function., which is the one of treatment plan for patients with malignant ureteral tumor. Key words: Ureteral Obstruction; Neoplasms; Stents
