Abstract

Objective To investigate the causes and therapeutic methods of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) after transurethral plasmakentic vaporization of prostate (TUPKVP) for benigh prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). Methods Clinical data of 628 patients who underwent TUPKVP from 2004 to 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. Sixteen cases occurred POCD within 6 to 72 hours after operation, the age of the patients was from 69~87 years old without nervous system diseases previously.The main symptoms of the patients were impaired memory, disorientation, language disorders and so on. Results No located signs of nervous system lesions were found in all patients.Eleven cases underwent head CT or MR examination emergently, and no obvious brain lesions were found.The symptoms were disappeared in all patients after treatment by psychotherapy and neurotrophic drug. Conclusions The cause of POCD after TURP is not clear. Age, personality, pain, lack of oxygen, drugs and other factors are related with POCD, and it has certain effects on patient rehabilitation.
