Abstract

1. 1. A very brief outline of the evolution of systems of classifying diseases is given. 2. 2. The importance of an etiological classification of periodontal diseases is stressed. It is only upon an etiological basis that a classification can be of real use in the prevention and treatment of disease. 3. 3. A new classification of periodontal diseases is offered, based upon etiological, anatomical, and pathological grounds. 4. 4. A limited explanation of some of the more doubtful and controversial etiological factors is given. This is devoted, in the interests of brevity, principally to some of my original conceptions.
