Abstract

Classical theories of radiation reaction are critically reviewed. The renormalized Dirac theory is discussed in particular detail. it is shown that all regularization prescriptions for this theory may be derived from a general dynamical correspondence principle. It is also shown that the physical content of the theory is severely limited by a general radiation condition. Various non- local and extended electron theories are classified with the help of the Herglotz- Wildermuth runaway theorem. The existence of electrodynamic collective modes are discussed; in particular the radiationless and self-excited states of extended charge structures. A possible connection with the existence of the mu meson is pointed out. In the concluding section various problems raised by the phenomenological radiation reaction theory of Ginzburg and Eidman are considered.
