Abstract
By using products of single-free-particle eigenfunctions for the container as a complete set of basis functions, a direct treatment is given of the approach to the classical limit of the partition function of an imperfect or perfect gas. This leads to a direct discussion of the case of a mixture of gases, thus making possible a natural discussion of Gibbs' paradox. The quantum correction is discussed, and the case of particles with spin is included.
