Abstract

ABSTRACT With the expansion of charter schools, astoundingly limited empirical research has considered issues related to the dimensions of civic learning in these settings. This article, seeks to augment the literature by addressing the civic efficacy of charter schools. Specifically, we employ key elements of the Octagon Model to conceptualize how charter schools influence civic learning. Findings suggest that civic learning is part of the charter school ethos. School climate, teacher practices, curriculum, and civic participation opportunities play an integral role in expanding civic opportunities to those youth enrolled in charter schools. Methodological issues, however, hamper the impact these practices may have on youth enrolled in charter schools.
