Abstract

Over forty percent of the world's population lives in cities. This is an average index which varies considerably from country to country. The percentage of urban residents in industrialized, developed countries is much greater, while in the developing countries it is somewhat less. Until even quite recently, the proportion of the urban population in the world and in certain countries was far less. Suffice it to say that in prerevolutionary Russia just prior to World War I, only 18% of the country's population lived in cities, while in earlier historical periods this proportion did not exceed a few percent or even a fraction of a percent.1
