Abstract

Abstract A CIRIA report presenting a regional review of the marine resources of sand and gravel around the coasts of England and Wales assesses the capacity of these resources to meet the anticipated demands for these materials by the aggregate industry and for beach recharge over the next 20 years. In an analysis of the demand for the materials required specifically for beach recharge — shingle and sand — the report identifies a shortfall for shingle in five of the twelve defined sub-regions, though there appears to be capacity within adjoining sub-regions to meet the demands. The report indicates a huge capacity at the regional level for satisfying the combined demands of beach recharge and the aggregate industry for sand, although at the sub-regional level some shortfalls have been identified off the coasts of northern England.
