Abstract
Abstract The circulatory effects of massive doses of hydrocortisone, 50/mg./kg., were studied in anesthetized mongrel dogs. Two methods of evaluation were employed. Ventricular function curves suggested an improvement in myocardial contractility at 60 minutes after drug injection. This augmentation of myocardial contractility could be established as statistically significant by the use of a Walton-Brodie strain gauge arch applied to the surface of the right ventricle during cardiopulmonary bypass. In addition, mild but significant vasodilatation was documented during cardiopulmonary bypass. The hemodynamic changes described in this study were of minimal degree. Any beneficial effects of massive adrenal corticosteroid therapy are not felt to be related to these mild circulatory alterations.
