Abstract

The CD spectra of a series of alkyl 2-phenylbutyl sulphides are recorded in various solvents. at room and at low temperature. Whilst the bands corresponding to the B 2u aromatic transitions are very similar to the ones observed in other open chain aromatic derivatives and do not show a significant influence of the sulphide group, the higher energy bands corresponding to sulphur A 1 → A 2 and benzene B 1u transitions instead indicate interaction between the two chromophores. These findings seems to confirm the different origins of the optical activity corresponding to the low and high energy transitions of aromatic chromophores.
